Ship Log – Entry 1
We departed from Elysium on January 23rd, 2008, and it’s been our fourth day out at sea today. The waters are still as calm as they were on the first day. We’ve been having a great time so far on our journey, but the silence at sea is a bit unsettling at times. I wake up in the night to the sound of just the water sloshing against the side of the ship, and I forget there are no other ships out there on the sea but our own. I hate to think it. I wish there was more life out here. I never knew how quiet it was ‘til I came out here myself.
I’ve realised since we left that bad things have happened in the world. Not that I didn’t know it before, but this journey made it all the more obvious. It’s like when you know an explosion has happened, but you don’t really know what it’s like there until you visit the site yourself. I got to safe ground before the bombs fell, and I took my safety for granted. I guess I know now what the rest of the world has gone through since then.
The crew is doing well. I’ve been doing my best to keep their spirits up on our journey. Nothing’s worse than a crew with no will to move on to their next destination. In a few more days I’ll write down another report. Hopefully, more things will have happened by then. Good things if fate fares us well.
